** Effective with high school graduates of Fall 2008, core curriculum will be 17.5 units.

First time graduates of a state approved high school must meet the following criteria:

                                       OR

  • ACT scores of 20or better (SAT of 940) or better 

                                    OR

  • Rank in top 50% of graduation class and require no more than one developmental/remedial course required by having a minimum ACT & English of 18 and Math subscore of 19 (SAT 460- 470)

SUBJECTS

English: Four units required
English I, II, III, IV 

Mathematics: Three units required
One unit Algebra I. One unit of Algebra II. One additional unit recommended from Geometry, Trigonometry, Calculus, Algebra III,  Probability and Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Applied Mathematics III (formerly referred to as Applied Geometry), or a  comparable advanced math

Natural Science Three units required
One unit of Biology. One unit of Chemistry. One additional unit recommended from Earth Science, Environmental Science, Physical Science, General Science, Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics, Physics II, or Physics for Technology. 

Social Sciences: Three units required
One unit must be American History. One unit recommended from World History, Western Civilization, or World Geography. One additional unit recommended from Civics and Free Enterprise (one unit combined), or Civics (one unit non-public)

Fine Arts Survey: one unit required
May be substituted with two units of performance courses in music, dance and/or theater; or two units of visual art; or substitute two units of studio art; or substitute one unit of elective among the other subjects listed in this core curriculum.

Foreign Language: Two units required
Same language.

Computer Science: 1/2 unit required
Select from a state approved computers course, such as, Computer Science, Computer Literacy, or Business Computer Applications (may substitute an elective course related to computers approved by the state including either one unit of Computer/Technology Applications, Computer Architecture, Computer Science I or II, Computer Systems and Networking I or II, Multimedia Productions or Independent Study in Technology Applications; or a ½ unit of Computer/Technology Literacy, Desktop Publishing, Digital Graphics and Animation, or Web Mastering; or a ½ unit as an elective in the other subjects listed in this core curriculum).

Additional Math or Science: One unit required
One additional unit of Advanced Math or Advanced Science from among the following courses:  Geometry, Calculus, Pre-Calculus, Algebra III, Probability and Statistics, Discrete Mathematics, Applied Mathematics III, Advanced Mathematics I, Advanced Mathematics II, Integrated Mathematics III, Biology II, Chemistry II, Physics or Physics II.

TOTAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 17.5 units

                                      AND
• ACT Score of 20 or better (SAT of 940 or better)

                                       OR
• High School GPA of 2.0 (based on 4.0) or better

                                       OR
• Rank in top 50% of graduation class

                                      AND
• Require no more than one remedial course by having a minimum ACT subscore in English of 18 and Math subscore of 19 (SAT 460-470).

Reminder
Please submit an official high school transcript, and a copy of your test scores and immunization record.  Most Louisiana high schools are now submitting electronic transcripts to the State Department of Education. Once your application for admission is submitted, Southern University's Office of Admissions can request an electronic copy of your high school transcript from the State Department of Education. If you have any questions, your guidance counselor can verify your school's participation in this program.
